The Best Hot Chocolate

Forget the mixes in the supermarket, all you need is delicious dark chocolate, whole milk and you can make your own rich hot chocolate. For best results use a rich dark chocolate.


  • 3 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla essence
  • pinch grated cinnamon
  • 1 tblsp Kahlua or coffee flavoured liqueur
  • 100 grams quality dark chocolate, roughly chopped
  • 1 cup frothy milk
  • 1/2 tblsp grated chocolate, for garnish


  1. Gently heat the milk, cream, vanilla essence, cinnamon and Kahlua in a saucepan until hot, but not boiling.
  2. Add the chopped chocolate and whisk until melted and well combined. Allow the flavours to mingle for 5-10 minutes. Reheat gently. Serve in cups garnished with grated chocolate.

Cooks Tips

If you have a milk jug with a froth making whisk or even a coffee machine, heat extra milk to make it frothy and pour on top of the hot chocolate before garnishing. Look for Richfield’s 70% chocolate in your supermarket. With 70% cocoa solids, ideal for eating as well as cooking.
