Sue makes this recipe regularly; it's easy to prepare as the apples are not cooked beforehand, saving plenty of time. Sue also likes the crumble to have a smooth texture and finish, so she is always generous with the butter!
Ingredients
- 8-10 medium-sized eating or cooking apples
- 1-2 tablespoons sugar, if wished
- ½ cup water
- ½-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼-½ teaspoon ground cloves
- Crumble topping
- 125 grams butter, diced
- 1½ cups flour
- 1 cup sugar
Method
- Prehet the oven to 180ºC. Peel, core and slice the apples and toss with a spoonful or two of sugar to taste, if wished. (Sue says most apples are sweet enough so not to add too much). Pile into a large 7-8 cup capacity ovenproof dish and pour in the water. Sprinkle liberally with ground cinnamon and cloves.
- To make the crumble, rub the butter into the flour and stir in the sugar. Spread evenly over the apples.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the apples are soft and the topping is crisp and golden brown.
