Sue's apple crumble

Sue makes this recipe regularly; it's easy to prepare as the apples are not cooked beforehand, saving plenty of time. Sue also likes the crumble to have a smooth texture and finish, so she is always generous with the butter!

Ingredients

  • 8-10 medium-sized eating or cooking apples
  • 1-2 tablespoons sugar, if wished
  • ½ cup water
  • ½-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼-½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • Crumble topping
  • 125 grams butter, diced
  • 1½ cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar

Method

  1. Prehet the oven to 180ºC. Peel, core and slice the apples and toss with a spoonful or two of sugar to taste, if wished. (Sue says most apples are sweet enough so not to add too much). Pile into a large 7-8 cup capacity ovenproof dish and pour in the water. Sprinkle liberally with ground cinnamon and cloves.
  2. To make the crumble, rub the butter into the flour and stir in the sugar. Spread evenly over the apples.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the apples are soft and the topping is crisp and golden brown.
