Seared Beef On Soba Noodles


  • 2 x 150 gram pieces beef fillet steak
  • 1 tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • salt and pepper to season
  • 250 grams soba noodles
  • boiling salted water
  • 4-6 shiitake mushrooms
  • 2 raddichio, finely shredded
  • 8-10 snow peas, finely shredded
  • 2 spring onion, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup light soy sauce
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 2 tblsp honey
  • 4 tblsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tblsp minced fresh ginger
  • 1 tblsp sesame oil


  1. Cook the soba noodles in boiling salted water until tender. Drain well and plunge into cold water and then drain.
  2. Season the beef fillet with five spice, salt and pepper. Panfry in hot oil for 3 minutes each side. Set aside.
  3. Add the mushrooms, raddichio and snowpeas to the pan and toss only until wilted.
  4. Finely slice the beef. Toss it in a bowl with the noodles, vegetables and the dressing. To make the dressing, shake together all the ingredients in a jar.
