Mini Lamb Thai Scented Meat Balls With Sesame Mint Dip

For a variation on this recipe Roll the mixture around half a toasted walnut or cashew nut.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 500 grams lamb mince
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese five spice powder
  • 2 tablespoons Indonesian sweet soy sauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup soft white breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour

Glaze

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce
  • 4 tablespoons Hoisin sauce

Sesame Mint Dip

  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 4 tablespoons rice wine or cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. Mix together the garlic, spring onions, lamb mince, five spice powder, soy sauce, egg and breadcrumbs and season with salt and pepper. The mixture may be prepared in a food processor, but be careful not to over-process as it may turn into sausage meat. Roll the mixture into small walnut-sized balls and toss in cornflour.
  2. Heat a dash of oil and sesame oil in a large frying pan. Cook the meatballs turning regularly until browned all over.
  3. Add sesame seeds, sweet soy sauce and Hoisin sauce to pan and shake so that the meatballs are coated in the glaze and toasted sesame seeds.

Dipping Sauce

  1. Place all ingredients in a jar and shake to mix.
  2. Serve on toothpicks or skewers with dipping sauce.

Cooks Tips

Indonesian sweet soy sauce is also called Ketjap Manis, meaning sweet sauce. You will find it in the Asian Sauces aisle in your supermarket.
