Basic Microwave-cooked Rice

Cooking rice in the microwave will not save much time, though for some people the option is preferred. And you need a very large container to avoid the water boiling over the top and creating a very sorry mess.

  1. For every 2 cups of long grain rice allow 2½ cups of tap cold water. Wash the rice well until the water runs clear to remove as much starch as possible.
  2. Drain well and place the rice into a microwave-proof dish that is twice the size of the amount of rice and water you are using.
  3. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and cook on high power for 5 minutes, then cook on 50% power for 15 minutes. Stand 5 minutes, fluff with a fork and serve. Cooking times will vary greatly depending on the temperature of the water, type of rice and the wattage of your microwave. Mine is 900w.

Cooks Tips

This method can be used to cook short grain rice, but do not wash it and remember the final product will be very sticky. Ideal though to serve with cream, sugar and fruit for a quick pudding.
